| Biography of Cheryl Grice Watterson |
Cheryl was born in 1953 in Yorkshire, England, where she began playing the guitar in school at the age of 8. At the age of 12 she began performing in the at the guitar societies around Britain. She won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music at the age of 16 and went on to win two International Guitar Competitions at the age of 20. In 1974, after winning the 'Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra di Alessandria' she appeared on Italian Television playing Rodrigo's 'Fantasia para un Gentilhombre with the Alessandro Scarlatti orchestra. In the same programme she gave the Premier performance of Italian composer Felicia Quaranta's 'Divigazioni per Chitarra', gaining rapturous acclaim from the composer. Cheryl appeared many times on BBC television and radio shows including appearances on the 'Black and White Minstrel Show'! However, she will be best remembered for her stunning performance of Albeniz Sevilla, on the Julian Bream Masterclass Series for BBC2 in 78, which gained her world renown. Cheryl also gave the Premier performance of Wilfred Joseph's 'Saratoga' concerto for guitar, harp and harpsichord at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London in 1979. In 1983, Cheryl took time away from performing to raise 5 children, convert an old 17th Century Corn Mill into a beautiful home, raise 3 Border Collies, and focus on her teaching. In 1997, Cheryl and her family emigrated to New Zealand where she became head of Guitar at the Nelson School of Music, and resumed her solo performing career while supporting her husband to re-train as a primary school teacher. In 2001, Cheryl released her first CD Un Sueno en la Floresta, an album of some of her favourite, beautiful Spanish and South American music. In 2003, she joined forces with Victoria and Martin Jaenecke to form the Trio con Brio. This versatile trio gives lively performances of works for all combinations of guitar/violin/viola and soprano sax.
